About Us

Aweres Township and the community of Heyden (46°38′30″N 84°18′30″W) is located about 14 km (8.7 mi) north of Sault Ste. Marie at the intersection of Trans Canada Highway 17 and Highway 556 (also known as the Searchmont Highway). The Township is an unorganized township, meaning that there is no municipal government in place, and is served by a local services board which oversees a volunteer fire department, policing board, roads board and also has a mandate to provide a local library service.

The area is best known as cottage country with a number of small lakes as well as atv and snowmobile trails. Views are often breathtaking with an abundance of nature and wildlife throughout the four seasons.

The many small lakes in Heyden, including Heyden Lake, Upper and Lower Island Lakes, Redrock Lake, Finn Lake, Maki Lake and Trout Lake draw a number of permanent and seasonal residents as well as tourists. In the Spring, Summer and Fall months with numerous outdoor activities to enjoy such as hiking, canoeing, kayaking and atv riding. In the Winter months the adventures continue with skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing and snowmobiling.

The registration of this website has been funded by the Local Services Board of Aweres, with ongoing development and maintenance generously supported by Superior Media (Sault) Ltd. as well as numerous other volunteers. Ongoing hosting costs are supported through community donations and local area businesses.
